How to Change Light Bulbs in High Ceiling Chandeliers?

Aloysius Noordam

Chandeliers are decorative light fixtures used in modern homes. They serve a dual purpose – illuminating the area while enhancing the space's aesthetic appeal. Sometimes the bulbs in chandeliers burn and become too dim. This brings a question: How to change light bulbs in high ceiling chandeliers?

Remember, chandeliers are hung from the ceiling. If their heat is not too high, changing the bulb becomes easier. That's because you can access the chandeliers and change the bulb. However, some chandeliers are hung in very high-ceilinged rooms. Such height makes changing the bulb difficult. In this article, I will discuss a few methods for changing the bulb.

What Is a High Ceiling Chandelier?

Chandeliers are decorative light fixtures hung from the ceiling. This fixture can be of different shapes and designs and consists of a bulb. These bulbs provide illumination, making the space look brighter. However, if this chandelier is hung in a very high-ceilinged room, it is called a high-ceiling chandelier.

Generally, the ceiling height of homes is around 10 feet. So, a change delivery hung at a height of 9 to 10 ft is not too high. You can easily reach this chandelier's height by using a ladder. However, some homes have ceilings over 12 feet high. In fact, some ceiling heights reach up to 10 feet. Chandelive hung at such a height that it is too high to reach. Even the standard ladder cannot reach it.

In simple terms, a chandelier at a height of more than 12 feet is called a high-ceiling chandelier. Remember, this chandelier is no different from a normal chandelier in terms of features and performance. However, its high height is what gives it its unique name. Such a high ceiling chandelier looks very aesthetically pleasing. But you face a real challenge when one of the chandelier bulbs fails and burns.

How to Change Light Bulbs in High Ceiling Chandeliers?

Changing the chandelier's bulb is easier. However, getting access to such a high-hanging chandelier is the problem. In the section below, I explain three methods for replacing the light bulbs in your high-ceiling chandeliers.

1- Use an Extension Ladder to Change a Light Bulb

Using an extension ladder is one of the easiest ways to change a chandelier bulb. Standard ladders have a fixed height, i.e., 10 or 12 feet. You cannot adjust their height, which is their significant drawback. However, the extension ladders are very long and can be adjusted in height. No matter how high the chandelier is, the extension ladder can help you reach it.

First, keep the ladder below the chandelier and extend it to reach it. After that, climb up and remove the chandelier's bulb, then replace it with a new one. You can remove the existing bulb by turning it counterclockwise. Once removed, you can install a new bulb by rotating it counterclockwise.

2- Use Telescopic Bulb Changer & Change Light Bulb

An extension ladder is very expensive, and buying it to change the bulb may not suit you. If so, I recommend using a telescopic bulb changer. This is a long pole with a single strong gripping head. The length of this pole is enough to reach the bulb of the chandelier. Use this telescope changer to ensure the gripping head grips the bulb.

Once done, rotate the pole anti-clockwise. This turning of the pole will remove the bulb from the chandelier. After that, fit the new bulb in the gripping head and mount it in the bulb position. Keep it in the right spot, then rotate the pole counterclockwise. This rotation will perfectly install the bulb on the chandelier.

3- Lower the Chandelier to Change the Bulb

This method may not work on all the chandeliers. Why? That's because only modern, high-end chandeliers come with pulley systems or dedicated motors. These chandeliers can be lowered in height so that you can change the bulb. The motorized chandeliers have a dedicated button that powers the small motor.

This motor then slowly lowers the chandeliers so that you can change the bulb. In the pulley system, a string is attached to both the pulley and the chandelier. When you release the string, the chandelier will come downwards. However, lowering a chandelier is a skilled job. Therefore, I don't recommend lowering the chandelier.

That's because chandeliers are very sensitive and small mistakes can affect their functionality. Therefore, you must take help from a professional to safely lower the chandeliers and change the bulbs. Once the chandelier is lowered, you can then remove the old bulb and install a new one. Remember, these features generally come in large chandeliers used in hotels.

Things to Consider When Changing Bulbs in High Ceiling Chandeliers

Here are some considerations you should consider when changing bulbs in high-ceiling chandeliers:

  • Before starting the process, you must turn off the power to the chandeliers. This will help you complete the bulb-changing process safely.
  • After switching off the bulb, you should not remove the old bulb immediately. Why? That's because the old bulbs on the chandeliers are very hot. If you touch them immediately after switching them off, you might hurt your hand.
  • Chandeliers come in different sizes and are compatible with various bulbs. Therefore, you must check the sockets of your chandeliers before buying a new bulb. This will prevent any issues during the chandelier's light change.

Conclusion

Let's conclude: chandeliers are essential equipment in modern homes and other buildings. They not only provide illumination but are also modern and sleek. Each chandelier consists of multiple bulbs. If any of the bulls get burned, it affects the visual appeal of the whole future. For example, a chandelier has 6 bulbs, and one of them burns out. The remaining five will provide enough light, but the chandelier will look incomplete and less appealing. Therefore, you will have to change the bulb if the chandelier is hung in a high-ceilinged room. In this article, I discuss three essential methods for changing the bulbs in high-ceiling chandeliers.
