Measure Your Hallway Width
The initial thing to do is find the width of your hall. Measure with a tape measure how far the walls are. Write this measurement down.
The minimum number of lights that you need will depend on the hallway width if you know how wide you want to be. 36 inch hallway will need a different fixture than 24 inch hallway. Measure with care for the best measurement.
Choose a Slightly Wider Light
A general rule of thumb: Select a hallway ceiling fixture that is 3–6 inches wider than your hallway. Say, if your hallway is 36 in wide and you need a light that is 39 to 42 in wide.
Going a little wider than the hall stops the dark corners. It reaches the walls several inches across so that the room comes into full sun. Don’t go terribly wide and crowd the small hallway.
Fixture Width vs. Illuminated Width
Pay attention to product information of hallway lights. There are two types of width:
- Fixture width - The length of the whole light fixture measured from top to bottom.
- Illuminated width- The width of the lighted part of the fixture.
At best, opt for a fixture with both sides 3 to 6 inches wider than hallway. Sometimes the visible width is smaller. Don’t forget to keep this lit width extended into your hallway.

For Semi-Flush Lights
Lights that are semi-flush on mounts are hanging a few inches down from the ceiling. They have an irregular shape or square color. Semi-flush lights also come in rectangle designs perfect for hallways.
Scale these lights based on the illuminated width of the fixture. The hanging blind might obscure a light. Extend the illuminated width a bit, so the hall is well-lit.
For Chandeliers and Pendant Lights
If you want something that is a bit more modern, use a horizontal chandelier or pendant light. These are fixtures hanging from the ceiling with a rope or cord. You can get big skinny chandeliers and pendants to use in hallways.
Notice the circumference of circular designs or length of vertical pendants. Seek spaces that are a little wider than your corridor. You can’t snarl the lights up on the walkway.
Put Lights Across Hallway Width
You might need more than one light on the same width in case of wide halls. Put the lights parallel down the hall. Make sure their merged lit width takes up the entire frame.
There are multiple smaller lights vs one super huge one that look better. The lights could fit architectural elements such as hallway arches or door jambs.
Set Lights High Enough
You want hallway lighting that’s at least 80 inches above the ground.
Because it’s high enough that nobody falls on the lights. It also avoids the lamps getting in people’s eyes while they’re walking down the hall.
Check product information on flush mounts for maximum depth to ceiling. Never install the lights to the ceiling. Have a couple inches or so gape.
Brightness Levels
Aim for 20 foot-candles of light minimum on the hallway. Lamps and candles gauge illumination brightness. Have 50 foot-candles or higher of light on hallways where you need a little more light.
