Why Alabaster Sconces?
Alabaster is a natural, flat stone that absorbs light. A lamp from an alabaster lightbulb will spill from the stone and the room will feel like an ecstatic embrace.
The light is soft and well-distanced with no bright spots. This is why alabaster sconces are ideal for ambient lighting. They flatteringly light a room broadside.
Other than the natural light, alabaster is also elegant. The smooth white stone is timeless, traditional and fits well with any room decor. Alabaster wall lamps add an elegant look to classic or modern rooms.
Determining Placement Height
Where do you hang your alabaster sconces, then? The first is mount height.
Designers usually suggest hanging wall sconces between 60-75 inches above the surface for ambient lighting in general. It makes the light penetrate more into a room.
And sconces more than 75 inches appear to be out of place. Smaller than 60 inches, and lights can distract and take your attention away from the seat.
That 60-75 inch isn’t very much ambient light for most homes. You can heighten your space though:
- For lower ceilings: Nearer to 60 inches. This makes the sconces proportionate.
- For two-story rooms: Increase the height to 75 inches. And with that additional height will eddies a greater area.
- Near seating: Place below, 48-54 inches above the sofa or seats. That offers a sunny place to read and work.
- Flanking artwork: Use 60-67 inch sconces for a special effect.
Depending on your room configuration, furniture and purpose, the exact mounting height will vary. But don't forget the 60-75 inch average.
Determining Placement Spacing
If you’ve picked a mounting height, next comes how many sconces?
So, which one is nice - those very close along one wall or the wider ones all around the room?
Alabaster sconces over or adjacent to main seating are most suitable in living rooms, dining rooms and master bedrooms. For example, 4 -5ft tall sconces over a couch.
You could, instead, set sconces that match about 5 feet apart either side of a bed.
By focusing on the sconces, it creates an interior light spot instead of spreading diffuse light across a huge area.
When you’re decorating hallways and small spaces, place sconces 5-8 feet from each other along the length of the wall. This disperses the light into a narrower area.
You can hang the sconces more distant, 10-12ft apart, if it’s a large room (for example, two story great room). Attach them to other lights (pendants, table lamps) to fuse the light.
Your aim is an even, symmetrical layout, just be careful about furniture placement. Sconces that are too close to one another or too far apart are visually distracting.
Choosing the Right Location
Here are a few tips for selecting the perfect wall for your sconces:
- Comfortable seating - Place alabaster lights in a place you’ll enjoy the ambient light: beside a sofa or bed.
- Primarily gathering space -The seating units include living room table, dining table and bed lounges.
- Siding - Position sconces on equal height with mirrors, paintings, consoles, and beds.
- Secondary accent walls - The evanescent light looks lovely going down the sidewalls instead of the super busy front ones.
- Avoid visual distraction - Leave some space behind the sconces so that the sconces stand out, but not conflict with other popular wall art.
- Close to electrical sources - Connect the sconces directly to the outlets, but do not use very long extension cords.
Consider the room’s layout, the flow of traffic, the artworks, the electrical wiring. That will enable you to choose the correct installation wall.
